Assistant Dean for Research Education

Alice L. Walton School of Medicine (AWSOM) is seeking experienced, motivated, and dedicated leaders and educators to participate in the design and delivery of an innovative four-year medical school curriculum that engages medical students in active and novel learning.

About The Position

The Assistant Dean for Research Education will oversee all elements of the curriculum related to research education, including all activities involving student training in research methods and evidence-based medicine. They will oversee coordination of student research/innovation opportunities, as well as events in the fourth year of training when students will present their projects and research findings. They will ensure that every aspect of the curriculum is up to date in terms of the latest literature research and closely work with school's library/information sciences teams. They will work with other education assistant deans on the creation of an integrated educational program.

This position is open at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor level within the non-tenure track, depending on experience and qualifications. While AWSOM does not have a tenure track, we are building a school that will facilitate exceptional professional development opportunities for our faculty.

Major Responsibilities/Essential Functions Specific to the Position:

  • Curriculum Development. Oversee the development and integration of all content tied to Research Education with the other curricular threads in the AWSOM curriculum. Coordinate curriculum design, faculty recruitment, student assessment, and course evaluations for course that teach medical students how to critically evaluate different sources of medical information, including clinical trials, care guidelines, qualitative data, large scale health data, and epidemiologic studies. They will help students learn about different types of medical research methods and how to assess their quality and reliability.
  • Work closely with colleagues throughout the School of Medicine to ensure that research-related topics and the latest technological advancements in health care are woven seamlessly into weekly patient narratives, foundational sciences teaching, and other didactics. They will also ensure that courses are regularly evaluated by students and improved based on student feedback.
  • Whole Health Innovation Projects. Help identify research mentors and opportunities. Recruit and train mentors. Guide students as they begin identifying potential topics for their Whole Health Innovation Projects early in their first year. In subsequent years, assist students as they design their projects, implement them, assess them, and present what they learned to faculty and student colleagues.
  • Teaching. Develop and deliver content to learners using active learning methodologies, with the assistance of their team. Create, deliver, and pre-record content that can be used in flipped classroom preparatory activities. Facilitate small and large group active learning sessions.
  • Collaboration. Collaborate widely with others in the medical school and the broader medical community, including the Assistant Deans of Foundational Sciences, Health Systems Science, and Clinical Education. Work closely with library faculty and staff.
  • Leadership and Supervision. Supervise faculty and administrative staff who are involved with research education-related elements of the curriculum.
  • Student Evaluation. Create learning objectives around research education and map them to the curriculum. Ensure that students meet objectives through use of appropriate metrics and assessment methods.
  • Service. Participate actively in leadership and group membership within the medical school, such as the Curricular Affairs Leadership Team, the Curriculum Committee and the Faculty Senate.
  • Professional Development. Participate in professional development programs to enhance teaching, educational and other skills needed to execute their responsibilities.
  • Other. Other duties as assigned.

Required

  • MD, PhD or DO degree
  • Five or more years of experience with undergraduate or graduate medical education
  • If a physician, five or more years of experience in medical practice
  • Excellent research background with multiple publications
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in undergraduate and/or postgraduate education, including teaching evidence-based medicine and research methods
  • Ability to apply adult learning theory.
  • Exemplary written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to effectively mentor individuals, including both faculty members and students
  • Strong collaboration skills and ability to recognize key stakeholders and advocates of innovation and ability to establish credibility
  • Commitment to meet any professional development requirements related to this role
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusiveness and ability to work with varied groups of educators and stakeholders
  • Proven success as an energetic and enthusiastic team worker

Preferred

  • Greater than five years of experience with undergraduate or graduate medical education
  • Ten or more years of experience in foundational science, clinical, or other types of research in health care
  • Proven academic accomplishments in research and scholarly activity
  • Comfort with an array of educational technologies and active learning methodologies

About Us!

Founded in 2021 by philanthropist Alice Walton, the School of Medicine will offer a medical degree-granting program that builds on conventional medicine with an inclusive, compassionate, and whole health approach. The School of Medicine embraces self-care to empower students to care for their patients and themselves and helps them rise to the health challenges of the 21st century with a focus on mental, physical, social, and emotional health. The School will have an attached clinic for training in these concepts. Currently, the School of Medicine seeks to be a national medical school with the goal of welcoming its inaugural class in 2025, pending programmatic and institutional accreditation.

Construction of the 154,000 square-foot building has begun with the goal of completing and welcoming the first class in Fall 2025, pending accreditation. AWSOM will be located east of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas.
