Overview

As a Broadband Technician II in Bend, OR, you will perform intermediate to complex installations, disconnects and service changes for residential customers, including FTTH (Fiber to the Home RFoG and GPON). These services include, but are not limited to, video service, HSD Services, and home phone service. This role performs moderate troubleshooting from the tap to the customer's electronic devices (TV, DVD, Modem etc.). This role performs underground and/or aerial construction involved with system plant, along with its' repair and maintenance supporting various customer-focused activities. This position will be responsible for installing, splicing, repairing and maintaining aerial, buried, and/or underground fiber optic and coax cable. This position will need to be knowledgeable of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within the field of telecommunications.

This position can be hired at either a Broadband Technician I (requisition ID #2024-23240), or a Broadband Technician II (requisition ID #2024-23241) level, depending on the skills and qualifications of the candidate. Different job postings exist for each of these positions. The pay range listed for this position represents the low and high end of the base compensation range. The actual offer amount will carefully consider multiple factors, such as relevant skills, qualifications, work experience, location and/or competencies that align with the specified role. Certain positions are eligible for additional forms of compensation such as bonuses and equity awards.

The base pay range for this position is $24.63/hour - $30.79/hour. Dependent upon skills and experience, offers are typically in the range of $24.63/hour- $26/hour.

Responsibilities
    Perform intermediate and complex installation of all necessary cable wiring (interior and exterior) and hardware from the tap/MST to the customer's equipment for reception of cable and other company services that are offered for single, multi-family customers and/or commercial dwellings over both Fiber Optic and Coax delivery methods.
    • Position may be responsible for inspection and correction of NESC safety violations for new construction builds, new service drops and legacy facilities.
    • Position may be responsible for the coordination of underground drop burial work with contractor and in-house underground burial crews, filling out, submitting and pickup up permits from government agencies as required to perform work in the ROW, tracking and updating status within the systems.
    • Duties also include inspections ensuring that work performed meets all construction and government standards and pre-inspection verifies of serviceability of new customers in regards to finding the best, most efficient and cost effective routes to provide service.
  • Perform connects (new connects and reconnects), disconnects, upgrades, downgrades, relocates, install additional outlets, fiber connections, and hardline cutovers; install or remove equipment (i.e. converters) at single or multiple unit dwellings.
  • Utilize test equipment to identify and repair signal strength issues and ensure optimum reception both optical and RF.
    • Use Locators, TDR's, FDR's and OTDR's while read system maps.
    • This may include interpretation of system maps, calculation of signal loss of cable lines and/or devices using signal level meters, reading and understanding plant blueprints and updates to blueprints (excluding main trunk lines).
    • This may also include pole, ladder, tower or alternative structure climbing along with the potential use of a bucket truck.
  • Perform all work as necessary to conform to quality control guidelines (includes compliance with requirements outlined in applicable regulations such as: OSHA, FCC, NEC and NESC).
  • Monitor and record system, drop, and in-house leakage; properly record all required information on work orders, surveys, referrals, etc.
  • Promote cable, internet, and other company services; educate customer on proper use of the service, including how to add additional services, channel lineups, proper equipment usage, and other services that are available.
  • Collaborates and communicates with other departments to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Clean, maintain, stock, and secure assigned vehicle and equipment. Perform other duties as requested by supervisor.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • 1+ year basic technical telecommunications experience -OR- current/prior military service with honorable discharge -OR- 6+ months TDS Telecom Broadband Technician I experience AND the successful completion of a documented progression plan.
  • 6+ months of basic fiber optic and/or copper cable splicing and repair, installation and repair, or switch training.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Must follow the TDS attendance guidelines in order to meet TDS's business needs including but not limited to our obligations to our customers and to our customers' needs.

Other Qualifications

  • Upon hire, must successfully complete customer-specific requirements, which may include a background check administered by the customer.
  • Requires being available for on-call/standby responsibilities and may require occasional travel. Must be willing to work overtime as needed.
  • Ability to maintain DOT (Department of Transportation) requirements in relation to operating vehicles with a combined GVRW (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) of >10,000 lbs.
  • Reliable and responsible, with a strong work ethic dedicated to a team.
  • Practical knowledge/experience with computer applications or burial construction.
  • Familiarity with company products and services.
  • Proven organizational skills and ability to multi-task with limited instruction.
  • Demonstrated customer service and sales skills, as well as effective communications skills (verbal and written) for interaction with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.
  • Physical requirements may vary based on company needs: Ability to dig, lift and climb.
  • Successful completion of the SCTE Broadband Premise Technician course.
  • SCTE Service Technician Certification to include Technical Foundation, Customer Service, Troubleshooting; or SCTE BDS Certification; or NCTI Installer Technician Course.
  • Successful completion of the SCTE Installer Certification.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the associate is regularly required to sit, stand, write and operate a computer keyboard, standard office equipment and telephone. The associate regularly communicates with customers. The associate is frequently required to move about and reach for items. Frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. May be required to balance or climb. Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.This position may require working outdoors, in mechanical/ equipment rooms, and possible extreme weather conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the associate is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and heavy equipment.The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an associate to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
