Job Summary

The Kao lab is looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and organized Staff Research Associate I/II (SRA I/II) to assist in research aimed at understanding basic pathophysiological mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases. To aid in the lab's efforts, the SRA I/II will assist the lab with multiple aspect of day-to-day operation: (1) C. elegans maintenance and plate pouring, (2) making solutions for experimental and c. elegans use, (3) antibody aliquoting, inventory and database maintenance, (4) glassware cleaning and autoclaving, (5) liquid nitrogen refill and maintenance, (6) tissues culture room upkeep, inventory management, restocking, and stem cell culture aliquoting, (7) unpacking all lab packages, record keeping, and inventory management for the entire lab, and (8) organizing and maintaining lab space.

As an SRA I/II previous experiences and knowledge will be beneficial in role when it requires consistent communication across the lab, setting up, maintaining, and troubleshooting equipment, aiding in orientation, and training for new lab members, and supporting lab safety procedures. Aside from training they will provide to other members of the lab they will also receive specific training to prepare them for more difficult and specialized research that is required for certain projects. While this position is not necessarily a supervisory role they may also be assigned the management responsibility for a small laboratory unit, with at least one Staff Research Associate I or a group of lower-level laboratory employees such as Laboratory Assistant

Required Qualifications

SRA I:
* BA/BS in a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
* Comprehensive knowledge of standard related scientific procedures, typically in a well established field of science.
* Conceptual understanding of basic human physiology and immunology
* Experience scientific equipment (centrifuge, pipettes, ultra-low freezers, biosafety hoods)
* Strong computer skills including the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
* Ability to multi-task and prioritize
* Excellent communication skills
* Flexible schedule - ability to work evenings and weekends
* Meticulous record keeping abilities

SRA II:
* In addition to the above, one or more years of recent, directly related work, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position.
* Flow cytometry experience.
* Experience working with human biological samples

Note: Classification and salary will depend on the qualifications of the applicant.

Preferred Qualifications

* Minimum one year of prior experience working with human biological samples
* Minimum one year of prior experience with flow cytometry/cell sorting
* Experience with or understanding of basic molecular biology techniques such as PCR, gel electrophoresis, next generation sequencing, immunoprecipitation, and bacterial cell culture
* Ability to draft routine reports and keep accurate records of work performed
* Actively seeks opportunities to increase skills and expertise
* Able to learn complex tasks with general instruction. Able to use experience to perform a variety of new techniques
