JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for assisting in the provision of nursing care to patients as delegated by a Registered Nurse. Responsible for performing tasks to support unit functions.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions

* Demonstrates a commitment to the mission of Swedish Hospital and demonstrates a service orientation and adheres to all responsibilities and standards of the Hospital.

Gives direct care as delegated by a Registered Nurse:

Vital signs Attaches cardiac monitor Respiratory care pulse oximetry obtains peak flow measurements Obtains Accucheck measurements*

Urine collections* runs UA and UCG tests Wound care* wound cleansing wound dressings - steri-strips, tube gauze, dry gauze, telfa/adaptic, silvadene, ointment application, cold sterile saline burn dressings Stool collection Assists with OB/GYNE care equipment set up specimen collection/prep/transport ENT care* obtains visual acuity equipment set up Orthopedic care* ace application sling application soft c-collar application finger/wrist splint application knee immobilizer application posterior mold application crutch/cane fitting/teaching toe taping, sling-swathe application Assist in code blue CPR certified performs chest compressions during resuscitation equipment set-up/assists w/ care i.e. suctioning Obtains 12 Lead EKG* Lumbar puncture care equipment set-up assists MD specimen collection/transport Assists patients w/ urinal, bedpan use, emesis Assists in restraint of violent patients Assists w/ procedures Lab draws IV starts/ dc's IVs upon being credentialed

1.Identifies changes in patient condition and notifies RN or physician

2. Transports patients to and from the Emergency Department. Assists patients in transferring between bed, cart, or wheelchair.

3. Cleans emergency rooms, including furniture, major equipment, and carts in accordance with Emergency Department infection control guidelines after procedures and patient discharge.

4. Assists in the maintenance and care of equipment, instruments, and supplies. Keeps the storeroom neat and orderly.

5. Stock supplies and linens in exam rooms according to designated Emergency Department routine. Empties full dirty linen containers each shift or as needed.

7. Participates in maintaining an environment conducive to safety, patient comfort, and privacy.

8. Participates in interdepartmental deliveries and procurement of supplies, equipment, and patient information.

9. Functions as Emergency Department secretary and performs secretary duties during the shift as the need arises.

10. Participates as "on-site" disaster team member as indicated.

11. Participates in unit staff meetings, appropriate unit in-services, and educational opportunities.

12. Prepares patient for morgue and transports.

13. Performs related duties. The above list may not be all-inclusive.

ACCESS TO PROTECTED HEALTH INFORMATION

Computer system access for the Nursing Division is assigned based on criteria as specified in Policy # 08-113-0, and on the minimum necessary as described in this job description.Approval for level of access is given by the system administrator (for Nursing Division this is Nursing Informatics) or the department that has ownership of system/module.See computer system Access Control policy.

PATIENT CARE/AGE SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS

Must be able to assist in caring for patients of all ages, from newborn to elderly. Must be certified in adult, child and infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

QUALIFICATIONS/BASIC JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • High School graduate
  • Must have ability to interact effectively with others, ability to observe and communicate accurately
  • ED Tech experience or EMT experience preferred
  • Completed the first clinical semester of nursing school or a MA/CNA program preferred.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION

  • Certification in adult, child, and infant CPR techniques
