Job Summary

-Master Marine Pilot will serve as a Master of Towing Vessels mainly on, but not limited to, the Cumberland River, Tennessee River, Tennessee-Tombigbee River, Ohio River, and Lower Mississippi River.

-Incumbent will be required to direct and supervise deckhands, steersman, marine pilots, gas & diesel mechanics, helpers, and other craft as assigned.

-This work includes ensuring each job has the necessary plans, materials, and equipment for the safe and efficient performance; and directing the work during progress to ensure that safe and standard practices are being conducted and work is properly completed.

-Give instructions and guidance to entire crew on new and unusual problems and techniques to coordinate these problems with appropriate technical personnel.

-Within established plans and schedules, the Master Marine Pilot is responsible for seeing that work is safely and properly completed.

-He/she advises project manager, supervisor, manager, or engineer in advance of situations that may interrupt or impede with work progress.

-The Master Marine Pilot will be responsible for preventing and mitigating hazards, and ensure a high quality of workmanship is maintained, and that work is completed in accordance with general industry practice.

-Ensure that union/management agreements are enforced, and applicable TVA personnel policies are carried out on assigned projects.

-Responsible for maintaining good labor/management relations and good public relations.

-Evaluates performance and effectively recommends personnel actions involving persons under his/her supervision.

-Responsibilities include planning, supporting, and promoting health and safety as an integral part of effectively carrying out mission of the organization.

-Conduct/participate in safety meetings, perform safety inspections of vessels, conduct required safety drills within USCG guidelines, operate smaller vessels/skiff, train pilots and deckhands on their job duties, ensure all vessels exceed USCG rules/regulations.


Supervision Received

This person is under the immediate supervision of a foreman, general foreman, project manager, supervisor, or manager who provides general plans and schedules the assigned work. The Master Marine Pilot performs some assigned work without direct supervision.


Supervisory Responsibility

Supervises and directs one or more deckhands, steersman, marine pilots, gas & diesel mechanics, helpers, and other craft, as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications (Consistent with Classification Standard)
Education and Experience/Certificates, Licenses, and Registration Requirements/Other Requirements

-Must have a High School Education or Equivalent and be capable of reading and interpreting verbal or written orders.

-Must be able to travel for extended periods of time and work overtime as needed.

-S-15 physical examination is required.

-Must be able to perform duties in all types of weather and conditions and perform those duties in a safe and professional manner and abide by all safety rules and regulatory requirements.

-Must maintain a USCG Merchant Mariner Credential with a rating of Master of Towing Vessels Upon Western Rivers and ability to operate vessels up to 500 Gross Tons.

-Must maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
