Job/Internship Description

Science Systems and Applications Inc (SSAI) is seeking an intern to support NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) on a project that will leverage existing and future NASA remote sensing assets to study in detail the direct connections between changes in the urban fabric and environmental changes in the Baltimore/Washington, DC study area with a potential focus on Prince George's County MD - the county within which GSFC resides. The aim is to develop, test, and assess data and methodologies regionally but with potential applicability to other areas of the country and the world.

The selected individual will:

  • Assess useability of satellite data for quantitative monitoring of the urban heat island effect and its impact on the environment and local vulnerable communities.
  • Assess quality and accuracy of a data set for urban change monitoring in the Baltimore/Washington DC area.
  • Use the Very High-Resolution commercial satellite archive at NASA for urban change detection and potential vertical change.
  • Perform field studies locally using field measurements to assess the accuracy of data sets and to increase understanding of scaling of radiance/temperature/land cover to satellite resolution.
  • Develop methods and assess the useability of NASA Lidar remote sensing (e.g., satellite/airborne) for urban vertical structure.
  • Develop maps or other cartographic products using NASA satellite data over the Baltimore/Washington DC and P.G. County region.
  • Work with local stakeholders to communicate science and to build capacity to use new data sets for local/regional applications and climate resilience efforts.
  • Communicate findings with the science community and stakeholders via presentations and written work.
  • Participate in NASA research proposals and publications as appropriate.

Required Qualifications:

  • Background/education in Geography, Remote Sensing, or Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  • Experience with, or interest in, inter- or multi-disciplinary science.
  • Ability to successfully pass a background investigation and obtain a NASA badge.
  • Permanent Resident or US citizenship required.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree (B.S. or B.A.), or equivalent experience.
  • Advanced remote sensing/GIS skills with potential professional experience (1-2 years) in these fields is strongly desired.
  • Field measurement experience.
  • Experience with remote sensing processing software such as ERDAS or ENVI/IDL.
  • Experience with Google Earth Engine and ARCGIS Pro or other ESRI tools.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as R, Python, or JavaScript.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills
