About The Position

The Clinical Skills Educators (CS Educators) will assist in curriculum development, integration, and instruction in the Clinical Skills I-IV courses where medical students will learn patient-centered interviewing, physical examination, professionalism, medical documentation, procedural skills, clinical reasoning, and patient management plan. Students and faculty will work with standardized patients (SPs) as one of the primary instructional methods in addition to small and large group activities.

This CS Educators will assist in the facilitation, implementation, and grading of performance-based clinical skills assessments, objective structured clinical examination (OSCEs), clinical performance examination (CPX), and other type of assessments within the curriculum to assess student's clinical competence in patient-centered history taking, physical examination, clinical reasoning, medical documentation, shared decision making, and patient management plan. The recruited candidate must be committed to excellence in instructing, facilitating, and mentoring medical students, in addition to contributing to associated activities such as implementation of new and innovative pedagogies.

These educators will assist the Director of Clinical Skills with the training, and ongoing education of faculty in the evaluation, assessment, and mentoring of students in the development and practice of clinical and procedural skills. This position will actively interact with the SP Program Manager, Clinical Skills Operation Manager, Director of Simulation, Simulation Specialists, SPs, staff, and other faculty members from the ARCHES curriculum. All faculty are expected to contribute to the SOM via participation in service-related activities.

The CS Educators will report to the Director of Clinical Skills. These are part time positions (.4 FTE).

The position is open at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor levels, depending on experience and qualifications.

Major Responsibilities/Essential Functions Specific to the Position:

  • Directly observes and provides constructive narrative verbal and written feedback to students on patient-centered interviewing and physical examination skills, professionalism, clinical reasoning, shared decision making, patient management, oral case presentation, and medical documentation.
  • Participates in the development of cases and assessment tools.
  • Utilizes educational and simulation technology platforms to collect data and monitor student's progress in achieving annual competency and proficiency milestones.
  • Assists the Director of Clinical Skills, the Director of Simulation, the clinical skills and simulation staff, other Course Directors, and faculty with meeting other ARCHES course-related objectives in any SPs and simulation-related activities.
  • Facilitates and grades performance-based clinical skills assessments, OSCEs, CPXs, clerkships assessments, and other type of assessments within the curriculum to assess student's clinical competence when SPs and/or other simulation modalities are integrated into the assessment.
  • Serves as a clinical skills mentor to students and faculty from other ARCHES courses.
  • Participates in the design and implementation of education program quality improvement efforts.
  • Actively participates in clinical skills meetings, faculty development workshops, and service-related activities.
  • Performs other duties as needed.

Minimum Education

  • M.D., D.O., or equivalent terminal degree from a Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME)/Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) accredited institution.

Minimum Work Experiences

  • Three years of experience as an instructor of clinical skills within an accredited medical program.
  • Five years of professional experience as a physician.

Preferred Work Experiences and Qualifications

  • MD/DO licensed or eligible to practice medicine in Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, or Kansas.
  • Multilingual.
