Overview

The Network Engineer's role is to build, test, and implement wide area and local area network infrastructure solutions that support multiple facilities at various sites. This includes participation in consulting services, project management, network performance and capacity, configuration management, security, automated monitoring/alerting, disaster recovery, and establishment of enterprise standards. Assists with the development of operational support documentation for the Network hardware and software to be supported, monitored, and administered by the Operations department. Knowledge of network protocols (IP, OSPF, BGP), equipment (routers, switches, access points, wireless controllers, hubs, PC's, Printers) and topologies (Ethernet, Fast Ethernet) are required. Working knowledge of all hardware and software that supports the enterprise.

The Network Engineer position will provide efficient and effective systems to furnish healthcare providers with the information to deliver top quality health care by working with the Network Manager, Director of Technology, Project Managers, and other IT management and staff, and external entities.

Excellent communications skills will be used to keep all key entities informed of project progress and ongoing support of the system. Responsible for supplying input for policies and procedures for the enterprise.


Responsibilities

Participates in the definition, design, test, implementation, and documentation of enterprise wide network solutions and standards which specify the characteristics of the backbone network components and cabling of all participating systems. Evaluates and tests new developments in technology to determine their applicability to the network and how we can use them to improve productivity. Assists with the development of configuration management procedures for all network components. Participates in the definition, design, and implementation of network security solutions and procedures. Assists with the definition of a capacity plan to ensure orderly growth with acceptable response time throughout the network. Evaluates user departmental devices/system requests which relate to the network to determine appropriate hardware and software specifications. Develops network operational support documentation to be utilized by the Operations department. Provides input into preparation of project plans monitoring own implementation hours and task schedule. Works collaboratively with other IT group members to ensure optimal network functionality. Provides training and technical guidance to Associate Network Engineers and Operations department staff. Provides night and weekend on-call coverage as scheduled. May assume additionalon-call responsibilities as directed by Manager. Works closely with other department teams to ensure efficient and effective implementation of project solutions. Assures compliance with federal, state, and local laws or regulations. Effectively prepares and complies with voluntary accreditation as accepted by the healthcare organizations we serve. Provides project status reports on a regular basis for assigned active projects. Provides input for network hardware and software recommendations to maintain optimal system performance, maintainability, and security. Maintains regular and consistent attendance at work. Adheres to all IHS Personnel policies and procedures, departmental policies and Safety guidelines. Behaves in a manner consistent with all Corporate Compliance policies and procedures.


Qualifications

Minimum of two years experience in Wide Area and Local Area Network infrastructure design and implementation. Demonstrates thorough knowledge and experience with network requirements and design methodology, topologies, hardware and software components, management and monitoring systems, security systems, file organizations, and capacity planning. Knowledge of health care industry systems preferred. Ability to understand and deal effectively with problems and opportunities, which arise, in a complex multiprocessing environment is crucial.
