In the role of Accountant Senior you will be working in our Finance and Administration Department.

Purpose

To perform functions that ensure the Controller's Office is successful in meeting the ongoing financial compliance needs of MCW by providing timely and accurate deliverables and oversight related to tax, tax-exempt debt, internal controls, audit and related regulatory guidance, while seeking and achieving continuous enhancement of financial compliance services, systems, processes and work product.

Primary Functions

Collaborate with the Financial Compliance Coordinator, the Financial Operations team, and the Treasury team within the Controller's Office to:

  1. Assist with the timely preparation and submission of corporate tax returns for MCW and all related organizations. Examples include 990s, the 990T, sales tax and 5500s.
  2. Assist with researching, monitoring and implementing tax-related processes and activities.
    1. Preparing workpapers and analysis.
    2. Monitoring transactions for potential tax impacts.
    3. Researching and implementing new tax guidance.
    4. Communicating tax impacts to finance leadership.
    5. Resolving technical tax matters.
    6. Working with external tax advisors.
  3. Assist with activities related to issuing and maintaining compliance with taxable and tax-exempt debt.
    1. Maintaining a solid understanding of MCW's debt compliance requirements; performing activities to avoid default and maintain tax-exempt status.
    2. Maintaining records, preparing calculations, and working with outside advisors to assure compliance.
    3. Participating in activities related to issuance of new debt, including responding to due diligence requests.
  4. Assist with duties to ensure and enhance internal controls related to financial processes.
    1. Maintaining security processes for external financial systems and services.
    2. Assessing MCW's internal controls over financial reporting and recommending process enhancements.
  5. Assist with the preparation of audit workpapers and footnote disclosures related to areas of responsibility.
  6. Assist with various department projects including implementation of significant new accounting guidance, ad hoc analytics and reporting, surveys, audit, and other tasks as identified.


Knowledge - Skills - Abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to listen critically and interact with individuals at all levels both within and outside the organization.
  • Advanced technology skills, including Excel, Word, automated accounting software, business intelligence cubes and related report writing tools is required.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving and analytical skills and the ability to work independently to assess available information, draw conclusions and understandings, and present such conclusions effectively to other parties.
  • High level of attention to detail and strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and stay focused on assigned priorities, work independently to meet internal and external deadlines and produce a consistently high-quality product.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute in a team environment.
  • Possess superior customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to show initiative, exercise judgment and adapt to change.

Position Requirements:

Specifications

Minimum Required Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting

Minimum Required Experience: 5 years

Preferred Experience: Tax filing, tax-exempt debt, internal audit, nonprofit accounting

Field: Accounting

Certification: Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or currently pursuing CPA preferred
