Do you ever wonder how the health care system incentivizes (or disincentivizes) the care delivered to medically or socially complex patients? Want to learn more about doctors and hospitals or about how health insurance affects health? These questions and many more are the ones being pursued by the research being conducted in Dr. Chien's "lab" where she uses large health plan datasets, surveys, and interviews to find answers.

Are you interested in health insurance coverage and how to make medical care for affordable for Americans? Do you wonder about how state policies affect health care for historically marginalized populations? Dr. Sommers' team explores important and timely issues in health policy related to Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act, and people without health insurance, using quantitative methods, economic analyses, and survey data collection.

This Clinical Research Specialist will be responsible for:

  • As directed by the PIs, conduct preliminary quantitative (e.g., claims and survey data), including regression modeling, and descriptive analyses; and potentially conduct preliminary qualitative (e.g., interview) analyses.
  • Perform logical and thorough literature searches.
  • Assist with ongoing data collection efforts:
    • Coordinate preparation of protocol applications for submission to the IRB. Update protocol and amendment changes.
    • Apply for claims datasets.
    • Recruit study participants.
    • Follow individual study protocols..
    • Complete informed consent procedures as assigned.
    • Organize strategies for recruiting study participants and screens study participants for eligibility as required.
    • Complete follow-up with study participants in prescribed settings as required.
    • Performs study procedures as designated.
    • Maintain regulatory binders, case report forms, source documents, and other study documents as needed.
  • File/maintain study protocols (e.g., human subjects, data protections); organize study procedures.
  • Provide relevant meeting support (e.g., logistics, supporting materials, notes).
  • Prepare, update, or proof manuscripts or presentations, including data visualization and formatting of results. Article co-authorship opportunities are very likely, but not guaranteed, depending on applicants' interests and contributions.

In order to qualify you must have:

  • Bachelor's with three years of relevant work experience OR Master's degree and 1 year of relevant work experience
  • Ability to perform highly detailed work with sustained attention.
  • Self-motivated and ability to operate independently.
  • High interest in subject areas.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required.
  • Working knowledge of and interest in improving experience in statistical and data visualization programs, such as STATA, SAS or R.
  • Well-developed communication skills.
  • Advanced writing skills.
  • Can commit to a 2-year position.
