About the opportunity

SWCA is seeking a Project Restoration Ecologist for SWCA's New York operations to contribute to the growth of our ecological restoration practice (specifically in the leadership of our invasive plant management practice). The ideal candidate will be interested in developing a long-term consulting career that combines high-level technical expertise with commercial acumen and leadership. Prior experience is necessary in the planning, design, and implementation of invasive plant management programs in upland and wetland environments. Prior experience is preferred within one of the following areas: hiking trail construction; lake and pond assessment and management; habitat conservation planning and restoration; bank restoration; and the implementation of ecological restoration in wetland or other sensitive resource areas for public and private clients.

This full-time, hourly position offers the flexibility of working from a home office located anywhere in New York State, with a preference for candidates residing in Syracuse or Buffalo.

This requisition can hire at two levels:

  • Assistant Project Restoration Ecologist; typically, with up to three (3) years of relevant experience and expertise
  • Associate Project Restoration Ecologist; typically, with up to five (5) years of relevant experience and expertise.

What you will accomplish

  • Perform herbicide application for invasive plant management.
  • Work in a team setting to complete invasive plant management, particularly herbicide application
  • Potentially work in a team setting on an assortment of the following areas: restoration plantings,bank/soil stabilization, trail construction, wetland enhancement, vegetation monitoring, and data collection.
  • Effectively communicate with other project team members and follow instructions well
  • Implement and complete tasks and responsibilities delegated by a lead/project manager, while also completing work independently and overseeing an invasive plant management field crew.
  • Take positive action and accountability for assigned work
  • Take accountability to pursue work not assigned and help manage invasive plant projects in NYS

Experience and qualifications for success

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in an environment-related discipline, such as: environmental studies, environmental science, biology, ecology or equivalent professional experience.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of professional experience supporting ecological restoration projects.
  • Previous experience in the management of invasive vegetative species.
  • Experience applying herbicides in New York State and/or holds a valid Pesticide Applicators License in another state.
    • The successful candidate must obtain their New York State Pesticide Applicators License before starting or within 2 weeks of their start date.
  • The position requires the ability to travel up to 60% of the time, primarily to project sites within New York and the surrounding states.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office products.
  • Previous experience in technical writing within a professional context.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Possess a valid New York State Herbicide Applicator's license.
  • Experience supporting ecological restoration project work; as normally acquired from five (5) years of industry related experience.
  • Experience leading teams in ecological restoration or similar work (landscaping, wetland construction, manual invasive plant management, etc.)

An employee in this New York-based position can expect an hourly rate of $26.25-$33.25/hour for the Assistant Project Restoration Ecologist position or $29.25-$37.75/hour for the Associate Project Restoration Ecologist position. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
